Forest Lake, Minnesota is a city in Washington County about twenty-seven miles northeast of Saint Paul. The city sits on the state’s largest lakes. The first settlements in Forest Lake happened when the St. Paul and Duluth Railroad was completed in 1869. The building of lake homes on the shores of Forest Lake and Clear Lake fueled the growth in the area. The area developed a commercial district in time, as well as parks and schools as vacation cabins became permanent homes. A great number of residents commute to the city for their jobs, and commuter bus service runs to St. Paul and Minneapolis. The current estimated population is 20,200.
Forest Lake Parks and Recreation manages the parks and trail systems in this beautiful city. There are 23 parks, 14 playgrounds, 13 ball fields and 18 open spaces in the city for use by residents. Besides the city’s recreational areas, tandem skydiving is made available by Skydive Forest Lake. Golfers will find Tanners Brook offers 18 scenic holes, on 7,000 acres with many bunkers and 15 water holes. Five sets of tees assure something for all age and skill levels. There is also a pro shop and clubhouse that includes a bar and restaurant. More of Forest Lake beauty and practicality lies in the Community Gardens in Tower Park. There are over 20 garden plots that are leased out per season. The city prepares the beds and provides water for those who choose to grow vegetables. Shopping in Forest Lake includes a variety of boutiques, specialty shops and shopping centers with top name stores.
