Grant, Minnesota is located in Washington County, a suburb of St. Paul. The area was first organized in 1858 as a township. It was primarily a farming community, but in time, as highways were built making access to St. Paul and Minneapolis easier, it was recognized as a good development area for homes. Commercial farms dwindled to be replaced by smaller farms and places to train and board horses. In 1995 Grant changed from a township to a city with a purpose to maintain its rural atmosphere and protect the land from high-density development. The current estimated population is 4,200.
Grant’s natural beauty is a great recreation asset. The many forests, wetlands, lakes and remnant prairie land offer opportunities for hiking, horseback riding, and snowmobile riding. One of Grant’s popular features for these activities is The Gateway Trail. With the many family-operated farms and equine facilities, the draw to the area for people is the chance to experience open places with an opportunity to live on large lots in a community dedicated to protecting the natural resources. Community Supported Agriculture includes orchards, a nursery, hobby gardeners as well as produce farmers. Grant offers no organized shopping centers or facilities for quick trips for shopping. Its proximity to the Twin Cities makes easy access to additional recreation, entertainment, and shopping.
Grant real estate reflects its rural character. There are neighborhoods with a variety of home styles, from older cottages and split-level single-family homes to large more modern homes. These lots range from one to 10 acres. In 1976 zoning set in motion a mandate stating the average lot size be 10 acres and a minimum size of five acres. Students in Grant are services by the Mahtomedi Public School District as well as the Stillwater Area Public Schools and the White Bear Lake School District. The Mahtomedi district offers elementary, middle school, and senior high schools. The other districts offer high schools. For those who enjoy an intentional rural community and the opportunity for large lots, all with the proximity of larger cities for additional amenities, then this is a must consider destination for homebuyers searching in the Stillwater area.
